Everything you see on this site is semi-custom, and created when you place an order. That means that while there are well over 100 different individual designs, they can be applied to the different materials offered, and to some extent scaled up or down as needed. But you have to be careful with that — what works at one scale can just become a mess if you try and condense it too much. Ask if you want to have a design or material change from the standard options.
At this time I am not offering customization on pieces, in terms of inscriptions or design changes, unless noted in the item description. If you have a suggestion for a new design, or an altered design, please use the email link below, and we can discuss it.
Unless otherwise arranged/specified, all pieces will be shipped with the paper masking material still in place.&nbp; This is primarily to protect the piece between the time it is made and the time it gets to you. But it also allows you to add pigment into the cut lines for greater definition/contrast, or to remove part of the masking and apply a suitable paint to customize your piece. Be sure to use the appropriate type of paint or pigment for the material and desired effect. We'll be happy to include a small scrap piece of the same material for you to experiment on, if you ask. But beyond that, what you do to the piece after it leaves our business is your business . . . and your problem if it doesn't work out the way you want.
Materials:
I offer four standard classes of materials: Acrylic, Ceramic Tile, Stone, and Wood/Paper. In addition, there are commercial coasters available in slate or other materials. Please see our Examples and Options page to get a better idea of how each of our materials looks.
Acrylic:
Commercial acrylic is available in multiple thicknesses, all with paper masking on both sides. I offer three choices for my designs: 1/8" (approx. 0.12"), 1/4" (approx. 0.22"), and 1/2" (approx 0.49"). The thin acrylic works pretty well for most designs, but not all, and has the advantage of easily fitting into any standard LED "3-D Lamp" base. The medium acrylic tends to give any design more "presence," particularly if the perimeter is an element in the design, but requires one of my special thick-slotted LED bases. The thick acrylic almost always makes the best presentation (again, particularly if the perimeter is an element in the design) but also requires one of the thick-slotted bases.
Unless otherwise specified, designs will be shipped with the masking in place. This saves me time and protects the acrylic from scratching. The masking can be removed with your fingers, though sometimes tweezers will help.
Note: acrylic tends to melt/break through if too much detail work is too close together in the design, and so is less suitable for small-scale designs.

Ceramic Tile
Light-colored commercial ceramic tile typically works well for most designs, even ones with a fair amount of detail. The default is an off-white, but "marble" or other colors are usually available. Specify your preference and we can discuss options.

It will also allow you to add pigment into the inscribed lines, if you want greater contrast/ definition. (Black India ink usually works best, but other pigments are possible — ask.) Stone
Light-colored commercial natural stone tile typically works well for most designs, though like acrylic isn't ideal for detailed designs at small scale. The default is a white or off-white marble, though other options are usually available. Please ask. If you want commercial slate coasters, those have a black coating which is etched off-white by the laser, with no masking.

Wood
Most types of thin plywood, veneer, and composite board (such as Masonite) typically works well for most designs. The tighter/more solid the grain/surface, the better it works for detailed designs. The default is commercial composite board (like Masonite) unless otherwise noted. Other materials are usually available. Specify your preference and we can discuss options.

LED Bases:
Hockey Puck style: Black, approx 3.25" diameter, 1.5" tall. USB powered (also works with three AA batteries), with cord but no wall-plug adapter. Touch control switch, 7 different color modes. Slot is approx 2.5" wide and only suitable for thin (1/8") acrylic. This is the common base used for a commercial "3-D Lamp." $10.00 each.
White oval style: White, approx 5.25" x 2.25" oval, approx 0.5" tall. USB powered, with cord but no wall-plug adapter. Remote control switch, 7 different color modes, with brightness and fade. Comes with an acrylic upright adapter to help hold acrylic pieces. Slot is approx 4" wide and only suitable for thin (1/8"), shallow acrylic. This is a specialized base, really only suitable for some "Art of the Gun" designs, though it works very well for those. $10.00 each.
Black rectangular base: Black, approx 6.5" x 2.5", approx 1" tall. USB powered, with cord and wall-plug adapter. Button switch controls 7 different color modes. Slot is 4" x 0.5". Comes with three black insert width adapters, and so is suitable for all thicknesses of acrylic up to 1/2". This is by far the most flexible base, and should work with any design on this site. $20.00 each.
