Venus of Laussel

Unlike the other Venus Figurines, this is a bas relief figure carved into a substantial block of limestone.  It is about 25,000 years old.  While debate about the purpose of all such figurines is ongoing, I have always felt that they are essentially ritual objects that still resonate at some deep level artistically.  They are a connection between us and our paleolithic ancestors — a glimpse into their minds and their creative impulse.  More information about this particular figure here.  This figure in both the simple perimeter and oval versions is approximately 5" tall.
